Spain’s Diego Costa understands why Brazil fans are booing at the World Cup

Spain striker Diego Costa understands why Brazil fans have given him such a hostile reception during the World Cup thus far, claiming they have ‘every right’ to do so.

Costa was born in Brazil and had the option to play for Luis Felipe Scolari’s side in their home tournament but instead chose to represent Spain after receiving citizenship last year. The 23-year-old played twice for Brazil in friendlies so was allowed to still play for Spain, and his decision to play for his adopted country generated widespread condemnation, including the director of the Brazilian Football Federation, who claimed the move was purely financially motivated.

The Atletico Madrid forward – who is on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea – was booed heavily during Spain’s 5-1 defeat to Netherlands on Friday and he understands why his compatriots feel the way they do.

“Just like I had the right to choose, they also have the right to do what they want,” he said.

“They have the option to boo or not. I was aware that it could happen. I am calm and I am proud to play for Spain and in no moment have I doubted my choice.”

Spain’s next game comes against Australia who also suffered defeat in their first game.Diego Costa scored 27 goals last season, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez (31) scored more in Europe’s top leagues.
