Sporting and Porto meet in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira final

Sporting will square off against Porto at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira on Saturday. Sporting are back in the competition after two years, while Porto are making their third consecutive appearance in the competition.

The Green and Whites booked their place in the Supertaca after finishing as the Primeira Liga champions last season while the Blue and Whites won the Taca de Portugal.

Sporting enjoyed an unbeaten run in the pre-season, winning two of their three friendlies. After a draw against Union Saint-Gilloise, they registered wins over Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao.

Porto concluded the 2023-24 season on an eight-game unbeaten run and continued their form in the pre-season, winning all six games. They concluded the pre-season with a 4-0 home triumph over Al Nassr on Saturday. All four goals were scored in the first half, with Nico González bagging a brace.

Sporting Lisbon vs Porto Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • The two teams have a long-standing rivalry and have met 249 times in all competitions. The reigning Taca de Portugal winners have the upper hand in these meetings with 92 wins. The reigning Primeira Liga champions are not far behind with 84 wins and 73 games have ended in draws.
  • They were evenly matched in three meetings last season, with one win each and one draw. They last met in the Taca de Portugal final in May, which the Blue and Whites won 2-1.
  • Sporting have just one win in their last 11 meetings against Porto, with that triumph coming at home in the Primeira Liga last season.
  • The Green and Whites have a 100% record in Supertaca meetings against the Blue and Whites, recording four wins and drawing four games, including the editions before 2001, which had two-legged finals.

Sporting Lisbon vs Porto Prediction

Leões have suffered just one loss in their last 15 games in all competitions, including friendlies, with that defeat coming against the Blue and Whites in the Taca de Portugal in May.

Matheus Reis is suspended for this match while Jeremiah St. Juste, Nuno Santos, and Rafael Nel are injured. Last season's Primeira Liga top-scorer Viktor Gyökeres is expected to start here despite not being actively included in the pre-season.

Dragões are on a 10-game winning streak in all competitions, including friendlies, and have scored at least twice in nine games in that period. They play their first competitive match under new coach Vítor Bruno, who is expected to field a strong squad in this match.

Both teams play their first competitive match of the season and will look to get their season underway on a positive note. The Blue and Whites have been the dominant side in recent meetings against the capital club and, considering their goalscoring form in the friendlies, we back Porto to eke out a narrow win.

Prediction: Sporting 1-2 Porto
