Robert Lewandowski is undoubtedly the hottest striker on the planet right now. He’s been in sublime form in the past few seasons, but right now he has really stepped up his game for Poland and Bayern Munich. Another striker, also aged 31, Sergio Agüero is putting in his fair share of goals for Manchester City this year as well.
Both strikers are heavily involved in the buildup play and routinely find assists too. Both Agüero and Lewandowski are very physical and are complete forwards. They use their left foot, right foot, and the head with equal ease, helping them to beat opposition defenders to the goal. Having them as the number 9 in the squad is an added bonus for any team. Lewandowski has benefitted immensely by the presence of Thomas Müller playing alongside him as has Agüero from the company of Riyad Mahrez.
Here we take a look at how these strikers have fared so far in 2019.
Robert Lewandowski is definitely the fitter player among the two strikers in question but Sergio Agüero had greater number of appearances in the second half of the 2018-19 season owing to the busier schedule in England and Manchester City making further progress in the Champions League to the quarter-finals as compared to Bayern Munich, who were eliminated in the round of 16 fixture itself.
Both the strikers scored 12 goals in the league while Agüero added 7 more to his tally through his exploits in the Champions League, EFL Cup, and the FA Cup. Lewandowski scored 6 goals in 4 knockout fixtures of the DFB Pokal and fell one short of Agüero in the first half of the season. However, the Polish hitman had 8 assists compared to the Argentine's 6 across all competitions. This puts him ahead in the overall goal contribution by a margin of a single goal.
The first half of the year puts them on level playing ground at first glance, but the Munich striker edges ahead owing to his overall goal contribution, when playing minutes are taken into consideration.
He played 2055 minutes as compared to Agüero’s 2142. Consequently, Lewandowski has scored every 114 minutes while the Manchester City forward has found the net every 112 minutes. This makes Agüero slightly more clinical in front of the goal. However, when overall gameplay is considered, Lewandowski, with a goal contribution every 79 minutes clearly betters Agüero’s 85 minutes per goal contribution.
Since the start of 2019/20 season, Robert Lewandowski is the top-scorer across Europe’s top 5 leagues and his scintillating form has taken the world by surprise. He has 27 goals and 1 assist in 21 appearances for Bayern this season.
Meanwhile, Sergio Agüero has 13 goals and 2 assists in 16 appearances for Manchester City in the same period of time. The Polish star has played 1802 minutes of club football this season while Sergio Agüero has 1099 minutes of action on the pitch owing to his manager Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy and an injury early in the season.
Lewandowski has found the back of the net every 66 minutes and has an involvement in a goal every 64 minutes. Agüero has found the net every 84 minutes which is a stark difference from Lewandowski’s time taken to score a goal. He has an involvement in a goal every 73 minutes so far.
Combining the stats for the entire year so far, Robert Lewandowski has scored a total of 45 goals and bagged 9 assists. Sergio Agüero has got 32 goals and 8 assists in the same period. This indicates that Lewandowski has been pretty much better in productivity this year. Even in key passes, he is slightly ahead at 1.29 per game in comparison to 1.27 per game for Agüero. All of these numbers display Robert Lewandowski in a much brighter light and he’s clearly been the better player of the two in 2019.
