As Barcelona wrapped up the FIFA Club World Cup title in Japan with a 3-0 win over River Plate in the final, they set a new benchmark. It was the fifth trophy of the calendar year for Luis Enrique’s side. They had already won the treble of the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey titles last season and added the UEFA Super Cup to their incredible trophy haul in August.
The Club World Cup was the Barcelona’s 20th non-domestic trophy in the club’s history – both continental and international. They are now tied with Egyptian club Al-Ahly who have also won 20 international titles.
Barcelona have now won five Champions League trophies, four Cup Winners’ Cups, three Fairs Cup titles, five European Super Cups and three Club World Cup titles. They had already been confirmed the best in Europe after the UEFA Super Cup win in August. The record third Club World Cup title now sees them move into first place – tied with the African side and ahead of other European giants such as Real Madrid and AC Milan (both of whom have won more European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles).
Al-Ahly have won the Afro-Asian Cup once, the CAF Champions League eight times, the African Cup Winners' Cup four times, the CAF Super Cup six times and the CAF Confederation Cup. They hold the record for most wins in the CAF Champions League, African Cup Winners' Cup and CAF Super Cup.
In contrast, Real Madrid won the Champions League 10 times (a record), the UEFA Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice, the Intercontinental Cup three times and the Club world Cup once (they last won it in 2014).
Meanwhile, AC Milan won the Champions League seven times, The Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup five times, the Intercontinental Cup thrice and the Club World Cup once.
Boca Juniors complete the top five with three Intercontinental Cup wins, six Copa Libertadores titles, two Copa Sudamericana titles, four Recopa Sudamericana trophies, one Supercopa Sudamericana, a Copa de Oro and a Copa Master de Supercopa title.
Other clubs who have more than 10 titles include Argentine side Independiente, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Premier League side Liverpool (both won the Champions League five times) and Serie A champions Juventus.
