The Premier League is in its final stretch with less than 10 games to go before the season is wrapped up. And there is still no clear winner in sight. Leicester City currently hold a two-point lead at the top over Tottenham Hotspur who have played one game more. Arsenal and Manchester City complete the top four and have it all to do to catch up with the league leaders.
While the Foxes’ Jamie Vardy and Spurs’ Harry Kane are locked in a battle for the Golden Boot having scored 19 goals each, at the other end of the pitch, a number of goalkeepers are vying for the Golden Glove. The award is given to the keeper with the most clean sheets over the 38 games in the season and Manchester City’s Joe Hart currently leads the way.
The English goalkeeper took home the award last season for a record fourth time (ever since the inaugural award was presented in 2005), and currently has 13 clean sheets to his name. Arsenal’s Petr Cech is in second place with 12 while as many as five goalkeepers have kept 10 clean sheets.
But when it comes to the number of saves made this season, Stoke City’s Jack Butland is the only goalkeeper to get into triple digits. Saturday’s game against Southampton saw Butland make his 100th save in the league this season at the rate of 3.1 saves per game.
The next best goalkeeper is Watford’s Heurelho Gomes with 93 saves and he has been credited with helping the Hornets earn quite a few points this season. Swansea City’s Lukasz Fabianski is third having made 92 saves this season for the struggling Welsh side.
Petr Cech is in fourth place with 90 at the rate of 3 saves a game. Other notable goalkeepers such as David De Gea and Hart have not made as many saves to make the top 10.
