Real Madrid are undeniably the most successful club in Champions League history based on the number of times they have lifted European club football’s most coveted trophy. In 2014, they beat cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid in the final to win a record 10th European crown.
However, a new statistic has emerged which has reinforced Los Blancos’ status as the most dominant team in European Cup history. This particular statistic, posted by the Champions League twitter account, employs a system where points are awarded to every game, group stage and knockout fixtures, played by a team until now in a regular League format wherein every win carries three points, a point for a draw and none for a loss
The list of the top ten most dominant sides in European Cup history features three from the Premier League, two each from Spain, Italy and Portugal and a solitary entry from the Bundesliga.
The Madrid giants top the list comfortably ahead of the trailing pack with an impressive tally of 729 points from the 376 games they have played so far in the Champions League. This includes 221 wins and 89 losses for Los Blancos.
German powerhouse Bayern Munich are a distant second in the list with 565 points. The Bavarians, who have won the trophy five times in their history, have appeared 297 times in the competition winning 167 of them while losing 66.
Table topper Real Madrid’s eternal rivals Barcelona find themselves in third position. The Blaugrana collected their fifth winner’s medal last season and boast of a record of 149 wins and 50 losses in the 260 appearances they have made til date thereby collecting 508 points.
Manchester United topple Liverpool as England’s most successful club in European Cup history even as the latter has won the title twice more than the Red Devils. United, who last won the title in 2008, have amassed 455 points in the 243 games they have played.
AC Milan complete the top half of the list with 404 points. Milan are second only to Real Madrid in terms of trophies won with seven to their name.
Juventus, Porto, Benfica, Liverpool and Arsenal make the bottom half of the list of the finest sides in Champions League history. Premier League side Arsenal are the only side in the list to have not won the Champions League yet.
