Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard whose goal tally is nearing a century in the Premier League, The Daily Star reports.
The England international has been stellar for his country in their recent World Cup qualifiers and his club manager is sure that he can keep up the performance when Liverpool face Newcastle United at St. James Park.
The 33-year-old sealed England’s place in next years World Cup in Brazil when he found the back of the net in the dying minutes of the game against Poland which England won 2-0.
Rodgers was quoted as saying: “He’s a remarkable man and a remarkable captain. England should be honoured to have someone like him on and off the pitch. He is a big player – and the big players score the big goals and make the big contributions in the big games.
“That is what determines a great player. That is what Steven Gerrard is. He is at the stage in his life where everybody looks at him as the leader, captain and inspiration. But I always remind people that they can’t forget he is a world-class player. The likes of Jack Wilshere will learn from him in the England team.
“The boys in the national squad and here at Liverpool learn from him. He doesn’t say much but when he does everyone listens, even the senior players.”
The Liverpool skipper is remarkable in the eyes of his manager who hopes that he can be a guiding force for the Three Lions during their World Cup campaign. Gerrard’s goal for England against Poland has been praised by Rodgers.
Rodgers said: “That’s the kind of goal that marks him out. People may have been nervy at 1-0 and he still drives the team on and has that fitness and quality.”
In spite of his excellent display for England, Rodgers is certain that the success will not go to his captain’s head as he leads the charge against Newcastle.
“I have no worries about him. Earlier this season he played extra-time against Notts County, then a few days later was brilliant against Manchester United. In that match, he put in his highest physical exertion into a game this season. He may have played in mid-week but I’m sure he will be flying for Newcastle.
“Steven still has a lot to contribute and he will have well over 100 Premier League goals by the time he finishes. He is the best player I’ve every worked with. He is such a big talent and a great leader who is a world-class player.”
