Former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard was at the Nou Camp last Saturday with his family, to witness another edition of the El Clasico. He posted a picture of himself and his nephews inside the stadium, thanking his ex-teammate Luis Suarez in the caption for helping him sort out the tickets.
The Liverpool legend was on BT Sport to provide coverage for Tuesday night’s Champions League fixtures, along with Rio Ferdinand, Gary Lineker and Ian Wright. Wright took this as an opportunity to ask Gerrard who he was supporting in the game, and Gerrard revealed that he was rooting for the home team because his ex-teammate Luis Suarez was playing for them. "Were you cheering Messi, Messi, Messi?" Wright then asked, to which Gerrard replied, “Yeah, and Iniesta."
Luis Suarez scored the opener in the game in the 53rd minute, heading home a Neymar cross which sent the home fans into rapture. However, Barcelona celebrations were cut short when Spanish defender Sergio Ramos equalised from another header late in the game, taking away a crucial point in this tight title race. Real Madrid currently sit at the top of the La Liga table with 34 points, 6 points clear of their fierce rivals Barcelona, who have 28 points.

Suarez and Gerrard played together since 2011, when Kenny Dalglish bought the former Ajax man in a £22 million move, until he was eventually sold to Barcelona by Brendan Rodgers for close to £65 million. Gerrard has often heaped praise on Luis Suarez, claiming that he was the best teammate he has ever played with, and also revealed that the pair kept in close touch with each other since the Uruguayan’s move to Barcelona.
The Uruguayan striker also hailed the role of Steven Gerrard in keeping him at Liverpool, when he was pushing for a move to Arsenal. “Arsenal’s interest in me was very public. I don’t think it is any secret,” Suarez said. “I had a private conversation with Stevie after training, and he told me to give Liverpool another season, and wait for Barcelona. Looking back now, it is one of the most important conversations of my life, but that is Stevie, he was a captain who was always ready to give his players advice.”
Gerrard is currently on course to return to Liverpool as a youth coach, after retiring from the game in November. He has his eyes set on management following his 18-month stint at L.A. Galaxy, and will hope to learn fast while working with Jurgen Klopp and other experienced coaches at the club.
