Stuttgart, Freiburg held to draws in German Bundesliga

Berlin, Sep 23 (IANS): Per Ciljan Skjelbred’s equaliser for Berlin denied Freiburg their first win of the season while Vedad Ibisevic squandered Stuttgart’s chance to snatch three points against Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga.

Berlin recovered from two straight defeats as Skjelbred’s leveller secured a point on the road Sunday.

Freiburg caught a brilliant opening as Admir Mehmedi broke the deadlock with just six minutes into the game. Mehmedi exploited a through ball by Sebastian Freis to overcome onrushing goalkeeper Thomas Kraft.

The hosts seemed content with the lead as they allowed Berlin to gain a foothold into the match. However, Berlin lacked precision, as they had to wait until the 38th minute before Per Ciljan Skjelbred poked home a corner from very close range to restore parity.

The second half offered only a few highlights, as both sides remained unimaginative. However, Freiburg had the best chance when the left post denied Gelson Fernandes’ long-range effort in the dying minutes of the encounter.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart’s Vedad Ibisevic wasted a last-minute penalty as he and his team had to share points with Frankfurt.

The hosts opened the scoring through Marco Russ who slotted home from inside the box as Stuttgart failed to clear a corner in the 14th minute.

Stuttgart responded two minutes later when youngster Timo Werner headed home at the far post to make it 1-1.

Both teams mounted an offensive but were unable to overcome the opposing defence. Although Ibisevic had the golden chance to wrap three points on home soil as referee Felix Zwayer awarded the hosts a penalty.

However, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international pulled the ball wide to leave his side with just one point.
