Surprising Stat: Only two Chelsea players have won the FIFA World Cup

Chelsea not dominant internationally

Chelsea have become one of England and Europe’s most dominant side. Supported by Russian billionaire Roman Abrahamovic, Chelsea have won all the major trophies in Europe and boast an excellent squad with endless talents but a recent statistic shows that only two players have ever won the FIFA World Cup while playing for Chelsea in the club’s entire history.

The first was Peter Bonetti, who won the World Cup in 1966 with England even though he was an unused substitute and the second was Frank Lebeouf who won the trophy in 1998 as France became the 6th nation to win the World Cup on home turf. Neither were influential in their teams performances. Italian giants Juventus, Inter Milan and Roma have had the most World Cup winning players with the entire Italian squad in 2006 consisting of players only from Serie A.

However, Chelsea have hopes of improving their record this summer as their players have been selected in some of the best teams. Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta have been selected in reigning champions Spain’s squad while Oscar, Ramires and Willan are set to play for host nation Brazil. Andre Schurrle has been named in Germany’s squad. With both Bonetti and Lebeouf winning the World Cup on home turf maybe the Brazilian trio will bring some joy to Chelsea.
