Tajikistan and Nepal lock horns at the Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe on Monday for an international friendly. With neither side reaching the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, they are set to engage in a pair of friendlies this month.
Ranked 105th in the world, Tajikistan ended their World Cup qualifying run with a 3-0 win over Pakistan. However, it wasn't enough to seal their passage into the next round. The Crowns finished third in their group, and saw their hopes ended.
But since then, they've participated in a few mini-tournaments, namely the 2024 Merdeka Tournament in September and the King's Cup last month. Interestingly, the central Asian side failed to win any of their four games, losing thrice and scoring none.
Following what's been a disappointing year for them, the Tajiks will hope to end the year on a high with victories over Nepal and Afghanistan, whom they face in their second friendly of the month.
Head coach Gela Shekiladze has called up 24 players for this month's double-header. Shukhrat Elmurodov and Azizbek Khaitov are the only two uncapped players in the squad.
Meanwhile, Nepal finished at the bottom of Group H in the second round of the World Cup qualifiers. They failed to win any of their six games, losing five, and accumulating just a single point.
The Gorkhalis, ranked 176th in the world, are yet to win a single game in 2024.
Tajikistan vs Nepal Head-To-Head and Key Numbers
- The sides meet for just the third time in their history.
- The Gorkhalis lost both their previous encounters with the Crowns - a pair of AFC Asian Cup qualifier losses back in 2017.
- In 13 official games this year, the Tajiks have won only twice - against Lebanon in the Asian Cup and against Pakistan in the World Cup qualifiers.
- Gela Shekiladze's team, however, is winless in their last four official games, failing to score in all of them too.
- Nepal is ranked 176th in the world, while their hosts are 71 places above them.
Tajikistan vs Nepal Prediction
This is a friendly game between two struggling teams. One side come into the fixture on the back of four winless games, while the other have not seen a win this year so far.
On paper, the Crowns may seem like the better side, given their experience, and by having played more games this year too. We're giving them the benefit of the doubt here, and going for a victory for the Tajiks.
Prediction: Tajikistan 2-0 Nepal
