Thailand host Malaysia at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Saturday for a clash in the 2024 ASEAN Championship, looking to build on their big opening-day victory. The War Elephants opened their campaign with a stunning 10-0 demolition of East Timor earlier this week.
Benjamin Davis, Suphanat Mueanta, Seksan Ratree, and Teerasak Poeiphimai all struck a brace, while Patrik Gustavsson and Look So Mickelson bagged a goal apiece in a memorable win, their joint-biggest in history.
Champions of the last two editions of the ASEAN Cup, Thailand couldn't have gotten their title defense off to a better start. It also brought them back to winning ways in emphatic fashion after two consecutive draws. Head coach Masatada Ishii could stick to the same XI for matchday two, as they aim to make it two wins from two in the competition.
On the other hand, Malaysia picked up their first win in the ASEAN tournament. Interestingly, that came against East Timor too. Having relinquished their early lead in the closing stages of the opening stanza, a second-half brace from Paulo Josue turned the tide in their favor again, as the Malay Tigers sealed all three points.
Before this, they had drawn 2-2 with Cambodia in their opener. With four points in the bag, Malaysia are at the top of Group A.
