Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has urged his former club to sign a new left-back following the Reds' 2-2 Premier League draw against Manchester United.
Earlier this Sunday (January 5), the Reds registered their fourth league draw of the campaign at Anfield against the Old Trafford outfit. Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah each bagged one goal for the Merseyside outfit in the second half.
Arne Slot's team, who have shipped 19 goals in 19 Premier League games this term, conceded both of their goals due to their full-backs. Lisandro Martinez netted the opener after a fine run down the hosts' right flank before Amad Diallo, who was unmarked by Andrew Robertson, got the vital equalizer later on.
After the end of the Premier League encounter, Carragher claimed that the Reds should sign a left-back in the ongoing winter transfer window. He told Sky Sports (h/t Mirror):
"Liverpool need to sign a full-back. I think they need a left-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold was really poor. He will be a lot better than that and Conor Bradley is fantastic. I just think Andy Robertson, who is an absolute legend, is just hanging on in every game. I don't think Kostas Tsimikas is quite of the standard to come in and replace him."
Carragher, who played for the Anfield side 737 times, concluded:
"I think if Liverpool could get a left-back in January, I think that'd put [them] in a really strong position to win the league. The Reds remain six points clear [of second-placed Arsenal] after Sunday's draw, but missed a chance to further extend their lead at the top ahead of a trip to third-placed Nottingham Forest next time out."
Robertson, 30, has started 21 of his 25 appearances across all competitions for his club so far this season. He has helped the Merseyside outfit register 13 clean sheets and has contributed one assist so far in the ongoing 2024-25 campaign.
How well have Liverpool fared this campaign?
The Reds are currently atop the 2024-25 Premier League table with 46 points from 19 outings with a brilliant goal difference of +28. They have lost just one contest across all competitions, having played 28 and won a whopping 23 of them.
Last summer, Liverpool were not comparatively busy in the transfer window. They signed just two stars, namely Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
However, the Reds could decide to be active in the ongoing winter transfer window to bolster their chances of lifting trophies this term. They have been linked with Martin Zubimendi, Milos Kerkez, and Antonee Robinson, according to reports.
