Throughout its 107-year history, Chelsea Football Club has seen plenty of impressive captains. Most fans have their own favourites, but several stand out as the best. Here’s a look at the 10 most amazing Blues captains ever.
10. Frank Lampard
Lampard has been a fantastic lead whenever John Terry hasn’t been available. If the latter hadn’t been in the team, Lampard would probably have seen even greater rankings. In 2007, Lampard was awarded the Community Shield as the club’s captain.
9. Graham Roberts
Roberts pioneered the way Chelsea played their opponents. As a defensive midfielder, Roberts led the club to their current place in First Division during the 1988-1989 season. Afterwards, he kept them there.
8. Jack Harrow
This old chap was Chelsea’s captain for the length of his career so long ago. While he passed on more than half a century ago, the legend remains of his being the first Blues player to play more than 300 games. In 1915, he led the Blues to their first ever FA Cup Final.
7. Terry Venableshg
Early in his career, Venables had a long career of more than 200 games for the club. Later, he went off to Tottenham Hotspur, but he has remained important in the Blues’ history. In 1965, Venables helped them win the League Cup.
6. Marcel Desailly
Hailing from France, this star played in London for more than six years, eventually reaching the 2002 FA Cup final and bringing the club to second in the league in 2004.
5. Colin Pates
He helped bring the Blues a Second Division title in 1984. Over the course of nine years, Pates played more than 280 games with the Blues.
4. Roy Bentley
As one of the most legendary players ever at Chelsea, Bentley is still a favourite with fans of the club. In eight years, the captain played 367 games and in 1955 led the team to its first First Division title.
3. Dennis Wise
Some fans might forget about this highly skilled captain, but he played more than 332 games for the club in his very successful 10 years. In 1997 and 2000, Chelsea won the FA Cup, 1994 saw a visit to the finals and 1998 saw the club win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
2. Ron Harris
Undoubtedly one of the most impenetrable English defenders of all time, Harris played for 19 years at Chelsea. For several years, Harris was captain and led his club to a pair of FA Cup finals and the club’s maiden European gold in the 1972 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Harris set the record for most games played at Chelsea with an amazing 795 appearances.
1. John Terry
One of the biggest legacies in the world of football, Terry is indisputably the most successful captain Chelsea has seen. He’s also scored more than any other defender in the club’s history. After winning three Premier League trophies and playing more than 450 games so far, Terry’s legacy will certainly live on.
