The 2012/13 football season: The one that ended an era

The biggest legends bid farewell to the game: Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher, Phil Neville, Michael Owen amongst others. While Sir Alex Ferguson exited with the kind of red-carpeted farewell even David Beckham could not match, others were not so fortunate. Despite having restored his managerial reputation, Rafael Benitez walked out of Stamford Bridge with barely a nod of thanks, while the last that Manchester City supports saw of Roberto Mancini was him being smuggled into a chauffeur driven car. It is anticipated that Ferguson, after his return will either become the director or ambassador of Manchester United. While it is largely unknown what the others who retire will do, Beckham wrote on his Facebook page, “Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love, however I feel like I’m starting a new adventure and I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead.” Paul Scholes might take up a coaching role at Manchester United. Phil Neville might do the same for Everton, but one thing all of us know is that these players will be missed sorely by the game, and football will be a lesser sport without these legends.
