The 2013-14 was arguably a very competitive season in the history of football. Whether it be the La Liga or the Premier League, there were constant ups and downs through the season. In this article, we will look back to the best 5 goalkeepers who stole the show in this season.
#5 Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen)
After coming on loan from VfB Stuttgart II, Leno has become the no 1 goalkeeper of the Bayer club. Standing at 6ft 3 inches tall, it is quite surprising why he was omitted from the World Cup squad. The German magazine Kicker has named him as the Best Goalkeeper of 2013-14 Bundesliga.
Dont be surprised if big clubs are after Leno in the transfer window!
#4 Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid)
The Belgian goalkeeper is one of the best keepers currently and is surely to become the best goalkeeper in future. The loanee from Chelsea has played an important role in helping Atletico win the La Liga title after 18 years.
He will surely shine at the World Cup.
#3 Wojciech Szczesny (Arsenal)
Szczesny who is third in our list jointly won the Premier League Golden Glove of 2013-14 along with Petr Cech of Chelsea. He has made 111 saves and has kept 16 clean sheets in the 37 games he has played. (Really it is an impressive statistics!).
Arsenal have finally found a replacement for David Seaman !
#2 Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
The Italian captain is second on our list for the best goalkeeper of 2013-14. Being 36 years old, Buffon is a perfect example of the saying “Old is Gold”. Buffon also lead the team bravely to their league title. He was also named as the “Goalkeeper of the 21rst Century” by the IFFHS
With the 2014 FIFA World Cup being his last world cup, we will have to bid good bye to this legend in the near future.
#1 David de Gea (Manchester United)
The Manchester United stopper was probably the best goalkeeper in this season. His wonderful performance won him the Manchester United’s Club as well as the Fans player of the year award. His save of Luis Suarez’s shot was absolutely world class and also voted Match of the Day’s Save of the Season. In this disappointing season for the Red Devils, he was the one man army for the club.
With Iker Casillas benched for most of the season, it will be interesting to see if Vicente del Bosque prefers the 23 year old over the Real Madrid captain in the World Cup
