A certain breed of players are often destined for greatness. They have a glint of golden eye in them and can be viewed glittering away since young. Some shine further, some fade away, but their sheen lasts long. After just 3 months in the premier league, David Luiz has already spun a niche as to what to expect from him in Chelsea. He has had a very mixed start to his Chelsea career. He has showcased his brilliance, exuberance and flaws. He has vindicated Chelsea’s faith shown in him in more than way. He has held his ground well, scored two crucial goals and has awestruck the fans with his grapevine hair-style.
He has proved to be quite an asset so far between his hair and skill. His tenacity too has been impressive apart from his hair-style which is the easies to catch attention off. Born in Diadema, near São Paulo, he made his professional debut for Esporte Clube Vitória in Brazil’s third division, Série C, six years before becoming one of Chelsea’s twin marquee signings in January, alongside Fernando Torres. He has been a revelation to Chelsea so far and there is more to him than whats just caught the eye.
The Dashing and Dazzling
Amidst all the hype of the Fernando Torres signing, its the lesser but equally impressive signing that has grabbed the headlines so far. Right from his first match, he has breathed confidence and spread it too. He is a versatile player who can play anywhere in the back-line and even as a defensive midfielder. He has an amazing technique and great pace. He is strong in the air and has terrific ball control. He is some what a contradiction of a football player.
He has the deftest of touches for a defender and great strikers instincts to notch it up with his bundle of energy and physical presence. He has shown to be just what Chelsea need and much more. David Luiz has already made his mark on the Premier League level, with his two vital goals and quite a few outstanding performances for Chelsea. He seems to be a mix of the right blend who will add flavor to Chelsea and appears to be settling in well. This has to go down to be one of Roman Abramovich’s shrewdest buys and and he has been worth every penny so far.
The Deleterious
At 23, not much is told cause not much is expected. But maybe now is just the time for him to start being a bit more mature and increase his concentration levels. He has been found napping at times and his crunch tackles have not been taken down too well. His game reading has been excellent, but time demanding tackles poor. He has escaped punishment so far for and got lucky on a few occasions.
The mark of a true defender is not just by his technique and ability, but by also his judgement and high concentration levels. His body checks on Rooney wasn’t a pleasing sight and he was indeed lucky to stay on the pitch that day. Though his goal was the highlight of that match, but it might have been different given another day. All these deleterious things might vanish with time, but sooner the better.
Amidst all the hype surrounding him, he still has a lot of questions to be answered and much to prove. He still has a mountain to climb and continue with good pace. If not, he might soon see the many Sherpa Nyima around him overtake him well and fast. He is a diamond, only waiting to be cut. He has got the ideal drive and start and is on track for a glorious career, but its till a long way out before anything is known. What we do know though is that his transition from the first gear to the second has been smooth and now its time to just sit back and watch him go.
