WHAT IS IN STORE FOR FERNANDO TORRES
Whenever we talk about the players who will have a major impact at the world cup , the name Torres is bound to come to the fore . Over the last few years , this talented and gifted striker has improved manifolds . He had shown glimpses of what a great striker he was during his Atletico days, but never was able to set the championship ablaze with his barrage of goals .
At that time, a shrewd manager was at the helm of Liverpool. Although, Fernando had been gaining interest from a number of clubs, he jumped ship to Merseyside. Why ? Because the future of Liverpool was bright then. Two champions league finals , once Champions League glory and a FA cup win. The kop was rocking in those days . Hence, there was no doubt that Liverpool was proving to be a good place to come and show your exploits.
The general theory in the Barclays Premier League is that a foreign player generally takes 1-2 seasons to hit form. But this theory was proved wrong by Fernando who started making match winning contributions in the side. Truly any team built around the talismanic striker and the anfield heartthrob, Steven Gerrard would be good enough to win the league. Last season, this almost came true when the side finished with more than 80 points and came agonizingly close to winning the league, only to fall short to Manchester united .
The main reason for finishing runner up last season was the form of its core players. Benitez didn’t understand that the players of the caliber of David Ngog, Albert Riera, Martin skrtel and Dirk Kuyt (with full respect to the man who brings a lot more to the match but just cannot score regularly) are not good cover for players of the caliber of Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano. Hence, what followed was a season of poor overall play, poor finishing, conceding last minute goals, coaching blunders and incorrect tactics .
Now that Benitez is gone, it will be interesting to see what happens to Fernando. He has publicly backed Benitez before but now his future at Liverpool seems over. No Champions League football this season, no new players means an uncertain future. And Torres might sadly have to leave Anfield. Where will he go? Manchester city? Probably no, because Manchester city are in no good position either. Chelsea? Maybe. Chelsea need a good striker to pair up with Drogba. Barcelona? Hahaha…..It seems they have become the new Real Madrid. But wherever he goes, he wont be able to forget his stint at Liverpool, a club which showed him the real passion of football, a club where he became one of the world s best football player, a club where he is revered .
