The Problem at Anfield This Season

There was a sense of Deja Vu in the midweek Match after Liverpool‘s 2-1 loss against rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool were caught napping in the early exchanges of the match with Gareth Bale assisting 1 and scoring 1 to put Spurs up 2-0 inside 20 mins. Liverpool responded well, but as usual could not land the killer blow. Jordan Henderson missed a glorious chance to silence his critics when a mistake by Lloris left the goal open only for the England U-21 captain to hit the side netting. A penalty should have been given when Steven Gerrard was bought down in the box before Half Time, but as usual, the luck didn’t go Liverpool”s way.

Steven Gerrard’s Form:

Will the real Steven Gerrard please stand up

Ad

The Liverpool Captain has been a shadow of himself this season under Brendan Rodgers. His ball retention has been poor and the trademark Steven Gerrard power bombs from outside the box have been missing. With just 1 goal in 13 games this season, Brendan Rodgers needs his captain, who has been the backbone of Liverpool for the past few seasons, to stand up. Rodgers also said in a recent interview that other players needed to step up, but it’s still no comfort for LFC fans who have been waiting for their Captain Fantastic to stand up.

Shaky Defence:

Downing could be on his way out soon

Ad

Liverpool , who had one of the league’s best defense till December last year under King Kenny, have been shaky this season with clean sheets only against Wigan, Reading and Swansea. The promotion of Jose Enrique to play a more advanced role has left Liverpool with Stewart Downing and Andre Wisdom to fill in for him. Stewart Downing is not a regular left back and his lack of defensive quality were exposed against Spurs in that first goal.

Lack of quality Going Forward:

Rodriguez is being missed

Liverpool has been one of the most entertaining team going forward with the skills of Raheem Sterling and The Latest KOP hero Luis Suarez. But what they are lacking is a genuine goal scorer who could give these moves a final product. Fabio Borini didnt have a great Start to his Liverpool career before getting an injury which had ruled him for 3 months.Liverpool dearly miss the exploits of Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez and Craig Bellamy who had the ability to win the matches from the bench. Liverpool needs fresh faces that can help Luis Suarez and get Liverpool to a respectable position this season.
