When he first signed for Chelsea in 2001 for a fee of £11.1M, no one expected him to leave the kind of impact that he did on the club. The England midfielder was always regarded a promising young player but he managed to surpass all expectations at Chelsea. Not only did he manage to become one of England’s best midfielders, he also became a much-loved figure at the club and is currently the clubs highest goal-scorer.
That being said, the veteran is definitely coming to the end of his career. Let’s take a look at some of his best moments in a Blue shirt:
1) Brace vs. Bolton Wanderers on April 30th 2005 – Although he had already established himself as a goal-scoring midfielder by then, his 2 goals against Bolton towards the end of the 2004/05 season were special; they helped clinch Chelsea’s first League title in 50 years. Both goals were nothing special as such; they were down to one-on-one’s that Lampard found himself in and he finished both in a very cool manner akin to how he usually is in front of goal. However, the importance of those goals were massive; Chelsea were now the Champions of England.
2) Goal vs. Bayern Munich on April 6th 2005 – A few weeks before his goals clinched Chelsea their first League title under Mourinho, Lampard scored a superb goal that still stands out as one of the best in his career. A cross from Claude Makelele found him inside the area. Before he could be closed down, he controlled it with his chest before swivelling and volleying the ball with his left foot beyond Oliver Kahn. Even for a man who has made it a career habit to score plenty of goals, this one stood out as being very special.
3) Penalty vs. Napoli on 13th April 2012 – Lampard has scored several penalties in his career; however, this one was arguably one of the most important one’s of his career. It was the 2nd leg of the Champions League round of 16 match against Napoli. The Italian side led 3-1 on aggregate from the first leg and despite losing 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, were still in a comfortable position to qualify into the next round when Chelsea won a penalty. Lampard stepped up to take it and duly converted it, a goal that led to an extraordinary comeback in extra time.
4) Captaining Chelsea to Champions League glory on May 19th 2012 – Chelsea came into the final as underdogs; one of the main reasons for this was that they were missing their captain John Terry. Lampard captained the side in his absence and was a key part in Chelsea winning the trophy as he netted his penalty in the decisive shoot-out that saw the Blues become the first side from London to win the Champions League trophy.
5) Brace vs. Aston Villa on 12th May 2013 – Chelsea were losing 1-0 thanks to a Christian Benteke strike. Lampard hadn’t had the best of games but stepped up when it mattered the most, scoring two goals to ensure Chelsea got the victory. Those two goals also saw the midfielder become Chelsea’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 203 goals, surpassing Bobby Tambling’s record. The whole season had been a mixed one for Lampard as he struggled with his form as well as his contract situation. He was eventually handed a new contract at the end of the season.
