The Wayne Rooney Saga: Oh God, not again!

“Around three years back he wanted to leave the club because of the club’s lack of ambition, today the very ambition seems to be driving him out of the club.”

Wayne Rooney’s transfer request in 2010 was met with both anger and fear by the Manchester United supporters. Whatever happened at the World Cup 2010 didn’t matter to them; he was still their star, the “only” player to carry the club forward in eyes of some. Having already lost Ronaldo and Tevez, United fans couldn’t digest the thought of seeing their talisman leave.

Wayne Rooney questioned the club’s ambition due to lack of “big name signing” but the club knew the importance of their star-striker and gave him a bumper pay-raise along with assurances that the club will invest in the squad.

Since Rooney signed his contract, Manchester United have won two Premier League titles and a Community Shield along with a Champions League final appearance.

“Not bad I guess?”

Manchester United have shown the ambition they promised with big money moves for players like Robin Van Persie, Shinji Kagawa and David De Gea among others.

But now, once again Wayne Rooney is back in the news – demanding a transfer.

“What’s new?”

For one, it’s the fans’ attitude.

Many of them want the striker to leave. Rather than keeping an unhappy player, who is perhaps the most talented English player and even the most talented United player but perhaps not the best in the current squad.

“He is no more, The Star Man.”

Wayne Rooney has been in and out of the squad at times this season and with the incoming of the phenomenal Robin van Persie, he has been pushed deeper into the midfield.

Missing from perhaps one of the club’s biggest game of the season raises question marks over the importance of the player and his value to the team.

“Not, if you are injured and on the bench, only to come-on to inspire your team from the brink of defeat. It’s certainly not Rooney I am talking about.”

Rooney has struggled with form and fitness and has not seen eye to eye with Sir Alex Ferguson after manager’s criticisms of the player’s above mentioned problems with fitness.

“But Sir Alex is retiring!”

That for one won’t solve the problem for the “Shrek” as he now being regarded by some of United supporters themselves. The man who replaces Sir Alex is in fact the man who discovered Rooney during his time at Everton reserves and gave him his debut for the first team. But since then Wayne has fallen out with his former…oops…new boss. Though the relation between the two has mended since, we will have to wait and see what David Moyes plans to do with his former prodigy with United having reportedly told the incoming boss that he will have the final say on Rooney’s transfer.

where will rooney end up next season

Déjà vu, Mr.Moyes?

Wayne Rooney is a class act, touted as the successor to legendary midfielder Paul Scholes but with his current issues coupled with the fact that he is not very happy at Old Trafford, which he has clearly shown after reportedly removing “Manchester United” from his bio, a story he has since rubbished.

Selling Wayne Rooney won’t be a popular move both on and off the pitch, but something clearly not opposed by as many fans as would have been two years back. Fans now don’t deem him as irreplaceable.

With David Moyes taking over from July 1st, his primary task will be to sort out Wayne Rooney’s situation, and decide whether he wants to keep a player who has asked to be freed twice in nearly three years!
