Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Walcott and now, Shakira.

What’s common between them? They all fell in love with a handsome footballer – David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gerard Pique respectively. So what makes these gorgeous women seek out these tough on field workhorses instead of clean-shaven businessmen? Is it the money? Or charm of the worldwide media attention? Or a chance to stay in the spotlight? But more than anything else, it is the irresistible charm of these hardboiled young sportsmen with great physique and a never say die attitude that wins them games – both on field and in life.

So who are the five most irresistibly hot-looking footballers of the present day? A small chat with the girls helped me in finding the answer to this question. And what I found out was a mix of the obvious and the surprising which captured my imagination. So here are the FIVE MOST HANDSOME FOOTBALLERS….

5. Nuri Sahin

Yes, you might be surprised with the first entry in this list, but this small (literally) wonder from turkey is a real magnet….or so the girls think. This young sensation made his name and popularized his face while winning the Bundesliga last season in the yellows of Borussia Dortmund playing alongside the likes of Mario Goetze and Shinji Kagawa. But it was not only his looks which made him a poster boy but also his play-making capabilities which earned him a call up from Los Blancos. And although he hasn’t got many chances in a star packed team, his posters still manage to vanish off the shelves! No wonder.

4. Paolo Maldini

OK. So this one has already retired. So what? The face value remains the same, isn’t it? This Italian hunk is considered to be one of the best defenders of the modern era with his footballing capabilities a thing to learn from. While he remained a one club man, he also has been a one woman man, married to a Venezuelan model since 17 years – and how hard is it to find one these days! Milan retired the No. 3 jersey in his honor with a clause that it would be worn only by either of his sons if they make it to the senior side. We are certainly waiting to check them out!

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

Some might detest me for not putting this man at the No. 1 spot, but trust my judgement and please bear with me. While this 6’3” footballing sensation is one of the two best players in the world right now, and scores for fun against opposition but, he is not only famous for his footballing skills. His controversial love life and vanity has always provided fodder for tabloids and thus has made him into an international media sensation. But, this has only boosted his Cassanova image. And how could one forget that Armani underwear ad! No wonder he says that most footballers are jealous of him!

2. Cesc Fabregas

Some people were dying to get his signature, others die to get a look! This former Arsenal skipper and present day Barcelona heartthrob has always been inspirational – both in his play and looks. No wonder the female gooners were the most disappointed to see him leave London. As he is still unmarried and has a clean image, he is now making catalonian women sweat. No wonder the heat is on in Spain!

1. Luca Toni

Haven’t heard much of him? Go ask the nearest female football fanatic. She probably has his CV memorised. Although Luca Toni failed to fully deliver on his early promise and had to keep switching clubs, but it certainly came as a boon for the international women community. He has the looks of a hunk but appears like a boy and his little stub along with his trademark hair, and large dreamy eyes make him perfect target for female voyeurs. In terms of footballing prowess, although he doesn’t come near the previous two entrants, he has proved his own mettle and played for some of the biggest teams on the continent and has always managed to remain amongst the goals.

After I showed this list to one of my female friends and asked for a review, she said she didn’t think much of it. Later, I caught her looking at the pics alone. So I guess this list is more than valid. Don’t you?
