Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to miss the 2014 World Cup after suffering a setback while recovering from a knee injury he suffered in March. He is set to miss the German Cup final. Alcantara also missed the Euro 2012 and the 2012 London Olympics through injury. The 23 year old was included in Spain’s 30-man squad but Bayern Munich have confirmed that he will miss the World Cup.
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said of Thiago’s injury ““A young man who has been working on his comeback and the World Cup in his country of birth – and suddenly both dreams have burst, we will take great care in the coming weeks about him and do everything to ensure that he is fit again to start the season 2014/15.”
Although the former Barcelona star was supposed to recover from his injury in a month, he hasn’t played for the last 6 weeks. Spain have several other injury concerns with Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique and Jesus Navas also picking up injuries at the end of the season.
