Arsenal dropped crucial points in the title race as Stoke City tactically out-played the gunners to secure a fantastic win for the home side.
1. No striking options to haunt Arsenal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger decided against striking reinforcements in the January window, instead choosing to show his faith in Niklas Bendtner and youngster Yaya Sanogo. That decision might come back to haunt him over the remainder of the season.
Today, while trailing the game in the final 15 minutes after conceding the penalty, they lacked a quality option upfront who could come on and change the game, or provide something different for the Stoke defense to contend with. To make things worse, Sanogo had a wonderful chance for Arsenal to level in the 5th minute of injury time but his effort was high and wide of the crossbar, highlighting the lack of proven finisher in the squad.
2. Stoke are not to be underestimated
Gone are the days where Stoke were the rugby team amongst a league of other teams playing football. They have evolved their game over the last year or so and are much more comfortable playing passing football instead of just hoofing the ball forward and looking to dominate aerially.
They played really well against Arsenal and created several chances throughout the ninety minutes. Although they got a lucky break when Koscielny handled in the box, the win was a result of a derserving performance against Arsenal. With games against Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle to come, they could affect the race for European places, or even the title race. And to think that Ivica Olic is yet to play a game for them.
3. Mesut Ozil is overhyped?
The German has been off the boil in recent weeks and his performances have suggested that he is not a big game player as he has constantly gone missing in key games for Arsenal which have hurt them this season. While Wenger decided not to start with him today, he did have a chance to show his class when he came on after the hour mark.
However, creating a couple of opportunities aside, he failed to really leave a huge impression on the game even as Arsenal were searching for an equalizer after conceding from the penalty spot. Given the reputation that he carries, the team undoubtedly expects more from him. Which begs the question- is he overhyped by the Arsenal fans?
