With all the talk of new strikers it is easy to forget that we have one of last season’s top goalscorers at the club desperate to prove a point.
I am of course referring to Romelu Lukaku who spent a season on loan at West Brom forcing his way into their first team by scoring 17 Premier League goals and proving a real handful and a brute.
He will feel like a new signing this season, the boy that we say intermittently in the 2011/2012 season has matured under the tutelage of Steve Clarke and could mean the striking solution we crave is already at the club.
When he first arrived at the Bridge he did look raw but the talent was undoubtedly there and the last 12 months have proven that, with him, Torres and Ba at the club, I think we have adequate cover and should keep the £40m in the bank for now.
Lukaku is by no means the finished article but he is now Premier League proven and if we cannot back him on his current form why did we sign him in the first place?
There will always be a big name striker to chase but now is the time to back the club’s judgement on forking out £18m on Lukaku, if we give him a chance we could see some big things.
