Mcmanaman continues to be one of the greatest Bosman exports from England. At Liverpool, Steve reached the peak of his powers and he was close to a £12m move to Barcelona in 1997. The Englishman failed to agree on personal terms, however, and the move broke down. Real Madrid then came calling in 1999 and this time, a deal was completed.
At Madrid, McManaman bagged 2 Champions Leagues crowns as well as 2 La Liga titles and was a fan favourite in the Spanish capital. McManaman made over 100 appearances for Los Blancos and delighted fans for over 4 seasons with his best moment being the fantastic volley he scored in the Champions League final against Valencia.
Having had immense success, McManaman decided to move back to his home country of England and sealed a switch to Manchester City where he finally retired in 2005.
