Alan Shearer’s very first Euro in 1996 was in front of home fans and boy did he give them a tournament to remember. Even though he went into the tournament with a poor scoring record, it made no difference to what actually happened. He was in scintillating form for his country and if it were only up to him, they might even have won. He could do no wrong.
Shearer ended the tournament on a high even though England lost their semi-final match against Germany. Having scored five goals, he was the winner of the Golden Boot and had a place of honour in the Team of the Tournament.
Euro 2000 was a nightmare for England as they couldn’t even make it past the group stages. Even though Shearer did his part for the team by netting two goals, he had to bring his international career to an end on a sad note.
