Manchester City v Liverpool FC - Premier League

Before the start of the game, there was no doubt that this fixture was the biggest of the season so far and that it could end up determining who goes onto win the title race. There were seven points separating City and Liverpool before the start of the game and this game was just like a cup final for Pep Guardiola's side. The Reds had an opportunity to go ten points clear at the top and all these stakes promised the match to be a brilliant one.

The match started with brilliant intensity and Liverpool came close in breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute after Roberto Firmino slipped Sadio Mane in on goal with brilliant pass and Mane poked it low past Ederson. His strike hit the post and rolled out to John Stones who smacked the ball, which hit his goalkeeper and it almost went into the back of the net. But Stones was able to react quickly and clear it off the line.

Manchester City took the lead then in the 40th minute after Bernardo Silva fizzed in a low ball from the left side which reached Sergio Aguero, who got the better of Dejan Lovern before blasting a fierce strike straight into the roof off the net from an impossible angle. It was advantage City at the halfway mark and it was very well deserved.

The second half saw Liverpool come back into the game after Alexander-Arnold picked out Robertson's run with an inch-perfect pass. The full-back knocked the ball across the face of the goal, where Firmino easily nodded the ball in for the equalizer. Manchester City went immediately back in front after a brilliant counter-attacking goal. Space opened up for Sterling who darted towards Liverpool's penalty area. He then picked out Sane, who smashed a brilliant low drive past Allison to ensure the 3 points for the defending champions.

In the end, it was a well-deserved victory for Guardiola's men, who were brilliant throughout the 90 minutes. It was a massive win for City, who moved back to the second spot and closed the gap to 4 points at the top.
