Since the first Premier League season in 1992-93, the English top-flight has grown massively into the most diverse league in the world. The PL has attracted some of the biggest players and managers to the league from around the world in the last couple of season, taking viewership figures to massive heights.
Despite the influx of foreign talent, English players have continued to be the most targeted players for teams to be built around. Top English players have entertained audiences for a long time and we take a look at five active English players with the most number of PL goals:
#5 Daniel Sturridge
England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is currently on loan to WBA, where he hopes to impress national team manager Gareth Southgate and dig the Baggies out of the relegation dogfight. The club languishes at the bottom of the table and suffered a massive scare when new loan signing Sturridge limped out in the fourth minute of the game against Chelsea.
Sturridge will need to bounce back quickly and aid the club's bid for safety and his bid for a spot in the national team for the upcoming FIFA WC. The former Manchester City and Chelsea striker, Sturridge has scored 74 goals in the league and is the fifth highest active goalscoring Englishman.
A technical player with superb quick feet and goal-scoring ability, Sturridge is deadly on his day and is a threat to any defender with his pace and trickery. The Englishman faces stiff competition for places in the national team with Vardy, Defoe, Rashford all vying for a place in the team.
#4 Harry Kane
Spurs and English striker, Harry Kane is one of the most in-form players in Europe over the last couple of seasons. He has won the Golden Boot for the past two seasons and is the second-quickest player to a 100 goals in the Premier League.
Currently, with 101 goals to his name, Kane scored his last goal against Arsenal in the North London derby at Wembley. Kane has continued his great run of goals scored in the last couple of season, as Spurs continue their charge for a spot in Europe's elite competition next season.
With Spurs still competing in three competitions, Kane will be massive for the club as they look to progress in the cup competitions and secure a top-four finish as well. The Englishman will lead England in the World Cup spearheading their attack and might be appointed national team captain as well.
#3 Peter Crouch
Stoke City striker and PL veteran, Peter Crouch is currently playing in his 20th professional season. The 37-year-old is a difficult man to mark and has scored 106 PL goals for clubs such as Liverpool, Spurs, Portsmouth and Stoke to name a few.
The former English international made his debut in 1998 and has 42 caps for England. Crouch is one of the league's most flamboyant characters and is nearing the end of his stellar career.
A highly motivated, strong individual with a keen eye for goal, Crouch caused a number of defenders problems with his height and his ability with the ball at his feet. For a tall player, Crouch's ball control, hold up play and body balance is superb and causes many a problem to opposition defences. The 37-year-old is still netting goals in the league and is only one of four active English players with a 100 PL goals.
#2 Jermain Defoe
Having played for numerous Premier League, Jermain Defoe has earned a reputation over the years for being a clinical finisher. With 161 goals in the Premier League to his name, Defoe's impact in the league has been immense.
The veteran English forward has made more than 450 Premier League appearances and counting, since his debut for West Ham United over 16 years ago. Defoe moved back to Bournemouth at the start of the ongoing season and has started putting in good displays for Eddie Howe.
The England international made his debut for England in 2004, and the 35-year-old striker is still vying for a place in Gareth Southgate's 2018 FIFA World Cup squad. However, a strong finish to the season is required for the player as the club find themselves in a position where they may not be most likely remain a PL outfit next season. With a string of good victories, Howe picked up the manager of the month award as the club look to secure their status in the league.
#1 Wayne Rooney
Former Manchester United, England captain and record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney tops the chart of being the highest active PL goalscorers. The 32-year-old Englishman is only 50 goals behind the PL all-time goalscorer Alan Shearer.
The Everton skipper has reached double digits this season and is well on course to beating Shearer's record before he hangs up his boots. Rooney has retired from international football and is solely focused on his club career with the Toffees.
The 32-year-old striker, Rooney is still one of the most feared and respected strikers in the league. With 208 goals to his name, he tops the chart and is one of the country's finest ever goalscorers.
