The Championship is the breeding ground for young talents to burst onto the scene before shining in the Premier League. Here are the 5 best young talents in England’s second division, who will be the future of the Premier League in the coming years.
1. Tom Ince
Son of former Manchester United and England legend Paul Ince, 21-year old Tom Ince was once a Liverpool player, but left the Anfield-based club for Blackpool without having made an appearance. He has developed by leaps and bounds there, and was the subject of transfer speculation this summer, with clubs ready to pay around £10 million for his services.
After moving to Blackburn in the 2012 summer transfer window for £8 million, Rhodes has been knocking in the goals for the Rovers, finishing the previous season as the Championship’s second-highest scorer and continuing in the same vein this term as well. Blackburn will have trouble keeping him with them if the side do not make the Premier League in the coming seasons.
3. Charlie Austin
Austin almost signed for Hull this summer before moving to Queens Park Rangers for a reported fee of £4 million, and could be playing in the Premier League next season if QPR keep up their impressive early season form. Owning a real eye for goal, the 24-year old is expected to be a Premier League regular in the coming years.
4. Danny Ings
Currently second behind Jordan Rhodes in the Championship’s Golden Boot race, 21-year old Danny Ings has seen a great boost in his fortunes this term, having already scored twice the number of goals he scored in the last two seasons combined. With age on his side and strong performances to boot, he will be on Premier League teams’ radars in the near future.
5. Chris Wood
New Zealand youngster Chris Wood was first noticed at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa at the age of 18, and thereafter impressed during loan spells at Birmingham, Bristol and Millwall from parent club West Bromwich Albion. After joining Leicester City last year, Wood has become a regular scorer, and finished the previous term as the Championship’s fourth-highest scorer. He has had a few appearances for the Baggies in the Premier League in the past, and could be set to become a regular in the coming years.
