Former Arsenal left-back Nigel Winterburn was better known for being an unforgiving defender, who went on to become a part of the legendary Arsenal defensive unit back in the early 1990s. That being said, he was capable of certain moments of brilliance and none were more brilliant that this howitzer he unleashed at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea back in September 1997 to settle a stormy game in the 88th minute.

Chelsea had taken the lead in the game through Gus Poyet but two goals from Dennis Bergkamp either side of half-time had given Arsenal the lead. The ascendancy did not last as Chelsea Italian star Gianfranco Zola made it 2-2 soon after in the 61st minute.

The game seemed to be heading for a draw and that perhaps would have been acceptable for both sides. In the dying minutes of the game, Patrick Vieira made a regulation pass to Winterburn who had surged forward and with Chelsea hanging back, he unleashed a shot of immense ferocity from around 35 yards. It cannoned into the top corner to give Arsenal a famous victory against their London rivals, on their march to the league title that season.
