Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has announced that he would be retiring from football at the end of the season, bringing an end to a glorious 17-year long career.
Here we have a look at the five of the most memorable moments during his time with the Anfield club:
1. Wins the FA Youth Cup | May 1996
Just days after Liverpool lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final, a young Liverpool team – including the likes of Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen faced West Ham United in the FA Youth Cup final. The Reds defeated the Hammers – featuring Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard – 4-1 on aggregate and brought a smile on the faces of the Liverpool faithful. It was Carragher’s first major success, one he won’t ever forget.
2. Scoring his first goal | January 1997
Just days after making his league debut as a substitute, Carragher was handed a surprise start in the very next game against Aston Villa due to an injury to Patrik Berger. Playing in central midfield, the young Carragher marked his full debut by picking up a yellow card for a foul on Andy Townsend after just 22 seconds and then scoring the opening goal (his first ever goal) in front of the Kop as the Reds won 3-0.
3. Scores the winning penalty in the League Cup final | February 2001
The 2000-01 season was a very successful one for both Liverpool and Jamie Carragher. The Reds qualified for the Champions League and also won the treble, starting with League Cup. After a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City in normal time, match went into penalties. The young Carragher stepped up to take one in sudden death and he calmly slotted home past the keeper. Sander Westerveld saved the next Birmingham penalty and Liverpool celebrated their first silverware since 1995.
4. Istanbul | May 2005
In May 2005, Carragher put in a performance that defined his Liverpool career as the Reds produced one of the most amazing comebacks in the history of football to win their fifth Champions League title. Down 3-0 at half time against AC Milan, it looked like it was all over but the Reds never gave up and scored three goals in six second-half minutes before emerging victorious on penalties. Suffering from cramp and exhaustion, Carra gave his all to stop the likes of Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka from scoring the decisive fourth goal. A memory that will always be cherished by all Liverpool fans.
5. Lift his first trophy – UEFA Super Cup | August 2005
Having won the Champions League in dramatic fashion against AC Milan, Liverpool got the chance to win the UEFA Super Cup for the third time in their history. With club captain Steven Gerrard unavailable, Jamie Carragher lead the Reds to a 3-1 comeback win over CSKA Moscow in Monaco. He lifted the trophy himself for the first ever time in his career and became the only third Scouse to ever lift that trophy. 2005 was indeed his best year for Liverpool as he was also named the club’s player of the year.
