With the Euros fast approaching just after the domestic season has ended, it couldn’t be a more exciting time to be a football fan. Along with the Euros, what excites most fans is the summer transfer window. With money-bags Manchester City, Real Madrid, Chelsea all preparing to let loose their purse-strings and teams like Arsenal, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund trying to spot the best of talents, I look at some of the most anticipated transfer sagas that might happen this season.
1. Eden Hazard
This lad has been flirting with City, Spurs, United and Chelsea for the past few months. From showing his gratitude to Sir Alex Ferguson for scouting him, to labelling Chelsea as a possibility, this lad has been getting on the nerves of every football fan. However, just 20 minutes after Piers Morgan’s rather scathing attack (twitter) on the young Belgian to ‘spit it out’, the Lille winger finally obliged and revealed he had decided to join the sixth-best club in England. Despite considering playing time and position as a vital parameter for choosing his club, Hazard looks finally to have settled for a club with no manager.
2. Shinji Kagawa
Ever since refusing a contract extension at Borussia Dortmund, he has been linked with Manchester United. Although Arsenal popped up in the race later on, but United seem poised to seal a €15m deal by this week.
3. Hulk
Another of those over-hyped players in my opinion. Yes, he has got a wonderful left-foot, but in my book he just isn’t so good as his €100m price-tag. Still, Chelsea look to seal a €38m move for the Brazilian, who could have been better managed if Andre Villas-Boas would have been at the helm.
4. Robin Van Persie
At 28, van Persie’s decision about his future will decide how his show-case would look for the rest of his life. He might stay at Arsenal and ‘strive for’ trophies, or might decide to join City or Juventus to win them. Moreover, with Arsenal only prepared to offer him £ 130,000 while City are ready to part with £250,000 for his signature, van Persie probably would have trouble sleeping for the next few months.
5. Luka Modric
He might cost £50m, but he’s worth every penny. Specially if United spend it. Modric has been described as a like for like replacement for Scholes at the heart of the United Starting XI, and few would disagree. He can directly slot into the 4-4-2 at United, and has experience playing in the Premier League. With the diminutive Croatian ready to hand in a transfer request after Spurs’ being ousted by Chelsea for a Champions League spot despite finishing fourth, and Hazard joining Chelsea, Manchester United must treat it as an obligation to snap him up, come what may. Although City are interested, they need to clear off players like Toure, Barry, or De Jong to accommodate him.
