Juventus FC v FC Internazionale Milano - Serie A

DISCLAIMER: The opinions in this article are that of the author and not necessarily of SportsKeeda.

In the earlier section, we had made a list on the world’s Top 5 left backs. Today however we look at their counterpart, the right back position which holds an equally important role in modern football. Though their is no clear winner and we make the list on their recent performances and there might be some who have missed out.

While deciding the list we have taken into consideration several parameters like pace, strength and value added to team. The work rate is also another serious consideration coupled with goals scored and assists provided.

Let’s have a look.

Javier Zanetti

A strange name to start the list as many would feel. However this veteran, who has been the heart of Inter Milan‘s defence for over a decade, now picks himself. His leadership abilities are second to none and it’s apt he is nicknamed “Tractor” for his strength and stamina. He has all the endurance in the world and it reflects on the number of caps he has won for the National side. Our number five.

Stephan Lichsteiner

Juventus v Parma FC - Serie A

Juventus’ right back and Switzerland international might be someone whom many fans might not have heard of. An attacking right back who can run, run and run down the wing, his athleticism is second to none. Full of energy for the whole of ninety minutes is his asset, and he more than earns his nickname “The Swiss Express”. It’s not a surprise that his mates at Turin shout at him “ Run Forrest Run”. A major reason behind the Old Lady’s recent success, this Swiss is our number four.

Branislav Ivanovic

Chelsea's Serbian defender Branislav Iva

If you have an epitome of a full back who can lay his foot on the ball, score goals from setpieces and run like a bull, its Chelsea‘s Serbian star Ivanovic. Yes, he does make mistakes sometimes in defending but he makes it up with his energetic displays, terrific runs and assists. Ask Fantasy Premier League managers and they would know what we are talking about. A true no-nonsense defender who can also play in central defence with no nonsense tackling makes him number 3 on our list.

Dani Alves

Santos v FC Barcelona - FIFA Club World Cup Final

If there was any doubt who is number 2 on our list, please squash your thoughts. Powerful free kicks and dominating runs in opposition’s defence are his forte. What’s more, he scores goals as well. Three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, two European Cups, two European Super Cups and one Club World Cup are examples of his immense team value and attitude on the pitch. A dream player to have on your side without a shade of doubt.

Philipp Lahm

FC Bayern Muenchen v Manchester City FC - UEFA Champions League

The best right back in modern day football, Lahm is a manager’s dream. Not many players have excelled at both club and International level, but Philip Lahm is an exception. He makes up for his miniature height with his powerful tackling and runs to the opposition third. An exceptional tackler and his unique anticipation makes him a world beater.

Honourable Mentions:

  • Bacary Sagna

  • Gregory Van der Weil

  • Aleksandr Anyukov

  • Glen Johnson (6th on the list)

  • Ignazio Abate

  • Alvaro Arbelo

We haven’t included Sergio Ramos as he now plays in central defence since Alvaro Arbeloa has joined Real Madrid.

This is our list. Perceptions will differ. Hence we would love to hear from you.
