Top five flops of Premier League this season

1. Andy Carroll for Liverpool

Liverpool bought Andy Carroll for £35million from Newcastle in January 2011. Since his arrival at Anfield, Carroll has not tasted success on a personal note. Kenny Dalglish had given many a chance for Carroll to prove his worth. Carroll has failed time and again to prove his position in the Liverpool’s starting line up.

Carroll has been consistent with his lack of form. Carroll could not show the form he produced at Newcastle. Carroll has not performed especially in Suraez’s absence. Carroll has scored three goals for Liverpool this season which is same as the number of goals, Paul Scholes has scored since he came out of retirement.

2. Fernando Torres for Chelsea

Fernando Torres arrived at Stamford Bridge for a whooping £50million from Liverpool in last January. Torres is the most expensive signing in the Premier League till date. Torres was bought by Chelsea to reignite their Domestic and European Honors which did not happen as planned.

Torres went on a goal drought this season for more than 893 minutes. AVB had faith in Torres and was waiting for Torres to find the back of net. Before AVB could show more faith and confidence in Torres he was shown the door even before completing a season.

Off late Torres has started to find the back of the net but his recent success has been over shadowed by the poor form he has been experiencing throughout the season.

3. Stuart Downing for Liverpool

Stuart Downing completed his move to Liverpool from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011. It is believed that Liverpool had bought Downing for £20 million on a four-year contract. Downing took five months to score a goal for Liverpool, and even that was in the FA Cup.

Downing has been ineffective this season and has not been able to show his form or worth at Anfield. It looks like Downing is scared to take on defenders. For Wingers it should be other way round. England are now considering to pick him for Euro 2012.

4. Adel Taarabt for QPR

Adel Taarabt was the star of QPR last season. Taarabt helped them earn promotion into the Premier League competition. This time last year, the player could do no wrong and was making headlines for a good reason. Taarabt had the most number of shots this season with just one goal to his name. Taarabt has been desperately unlucky this season. He has failed to show the kind of form he did last season and has been incredibly inconsistent.

The Spurs reject has been the QPR’s best player and was wanted by PSG. This was a season ago. It’s not the case now.

5. Roger Johnson for Wolves

Wolves wanted to improve their defense this season. They paid £7 million to acquire the services of the Birmingham centre-half. Johnson has not been able to give any kind of support to the back four. Their form on the road or at home has been equally pathetic.

Once McCarthy was sacked as Wolves manager, things have become worse for Johnson and Wolves. The first thing that care taker manager Terry Connor did after assuming the manager role was to drop Johnson from his starting line up. Things did not go as per Connor’s plan. Due to injury crisis, Connor had to restore Johnson in his starting line up, but it has hardly been plain sailing since then for Wolves.

Johnson was involved in an ugly confrontation with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey during their home defeat to Bolton and subsequently demoted to the bench once more.
