Chelsea and Spanish striker Fernando Torres sustained a knee injury during Chelsea’s comfortable 4-0 drubbing of Steaua Bucharest in last night’s Champions League Group stage match-up.
The player could only manage to feature for 11 minutes for the Blues is now set to get a scan to determine the extent of his latest injury.Chelsea boss thinks Torres can possibly make it back to the team within 15 days meanwhile missing out on the game against Norwich City this weekend and his national team’s World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Belarus next week.
Jose Mourinho addressed the issue in the media and said, “It’s something in his knee, his ligament, and we have to wait for the scan. The doctor is very confident it’s not a big injury like we had with Marco van Ginkel (the Dutch midfielder who is out for six months following knee surgery).”
‘Torres knows that he doesn’t play against Norwich [due to suspension]. Then he knows he doesn’t go with the national team so he has time before the next game he can play, against Cardiff. Let’s see the scan.
‘It is a pity for the guy because he is in a very good moment physically and he played fantastic against Tottenham, and he played today because he deserved to start. It is a pity but that is football.’
Mourinho also spoke about his team Champions League campaign and said : ‘If we didn’t win today we were in trouble. We have cleared a little bit the fact that we lost the first game but everything is there. We finish the group with a game at home, that is an advantage, but at this moment I don’t want to think about finishing first, I want to think about qualifying for the next stage. After that we will see.’
