Liverpool produced a scintillating display to subdue Tottenham in a Premier League classic on Sunday, December 22, winning 6-3.
Following their massive 5-0 win over Southampton last week, Ange Postecoglou made two changes to the side. Pedro Perro came in for Destiny Udogie, while Lucas Bergvall was replaced by Yves Bissouma.
On the other hand, Arne Slot made a solitary alteration to the team that played out a 2-2 draw against Fulham. Andy Robertson retained his place in the side having served his suspension midweek, while Alexis Mac Allister replaced Curtis Jones.
Liverpool enjoyed a dominant spell early on, hitting the woodwork before Luis Diaz gave them the lead in the 23rd minute. An inch-perfect cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold found the Colombian who headed home to open the scoring.
The Reds doubled their advantage soon after. Dominik Szoboszlai was unable to convert a header but it fell to Mac Allister who tapped home from close range to make it 2-0.
Tottenham then got themselves back into the game, pulling one back through James Maddison. Mac Allister was robbed of the ball in Liverpool's half and Dejan Kulusevski found the 28-year-old to fire home a great effort.
It did not remain 2-1 for much longer as the visitors added another. Szoboszlai got into the act, completing a simple chance after being set up by Mohamed Salah off a sweeping counter-attack.
The game exploded for Liverpool following the break as they found top form. Salah scored twice in seven minutes. The Egyptian led a threatening counter again, scoring from point-blank range after Szoboszlai was unable to do so. His second was similar, with the Hungarian providing another simple tap-in to make it 5-1.
Tottenham put some doubt in the minds of Reds fans when Kulusevski found the back of the net. He volleyed home a chipped ball from Dominic Solanke, making it 5-2 after 72 minutes.
The hosts raised their intensity and scored again. Solanke was in the right place to finish a move, being set up by Brennan Johnson, to cut the deficit to two.
However, the visitors quashed all faint hopes of a comeback, scoring yet again just two minutes after Tottenham's third. Salah provided an accurate pass for Luis Diaz whose precise finish found the corner.
An enthralling affair saw Tottenham lose further ground in the race for top four, finding themselves 11th heading into Christmas. Liverpool, meanwhile, sit comfortably at the top of the table, four points clear with a game in hand. Here are the player ratings:
Tottenham Player Ratings
Fraser Forster - 4.5/10
He kept Tottenham in the game early on with a great save but continues to have issues on the ball. Finding a backup keeper may become a priority for the side in the upcoming transfer window.
Pedro Porro - 5/10
Porro continues to face issues defensively down the right. Liverpool were constantly threatening down the left despite Cody Gakpo not collecting a goal or assist.
Radu Dragusin - 4/10
A mix of poor defending and low confidence made for a dreadful outing for the Romanian defender. He was caught out of position too often, putting the side in danger.
Archie Gray - 4.5/10
The teenager has been dealt a tough hand, playing out of position. He had a difficult time out against one of the league's most prolific outings.
Djed Spence - 6.5/10
A rare silver lining, did well to contain Salah in moments. He also looked decent on the ball, finishing the game with four tackles, three blocks, three clearances and seven passes into the final third.
Pape Matar Sarr - 5/10
Bypassed too easily and too often, Sarr along with Bissouma had an outing to forget.
Yves Bissouma - 4/10
Tottenham's injury crisis and the suspension to Rodrigo Bentancur means the underperforming Bissouma has to feature regularly for Postecoglou. He was no match for Liverpool's midfield.
Dejan Kulusevski - 7/10
Kulusevski continues to have an impressive season and was a spark for Spurs when going forward, notching a goal and an assist.
James Maddison - 6.5/10
Maddison got on the scoresheet with a splendid effort and performed well on the ball, finishing with one chance created and five passes into the final third.
Heung-min Son - 5.5/10
A forgettable outing for Tottenham's star, rarely proving to be a threat down the left for the side.
Dominic Solanke - 7/10
He had a mostly silent outing but chipped in with a goal and an assist, similar to Kulusevski.
Substitutes
Lucas Bergvall - 6/10
He also struggled against Liverpool's dominant midfield but looked better on the ball than Sarr.
Brennan Johnson - 6.5/10
Johnson's arrival allowed Kulusevski to move centrally and he collected an assist but was otherwise mostly silent.
Timo Werner - N/A
He came on too late and did not play enough minutes to merit a rating.
