Tottenham Hotspur Summer Transfers 2011 Review

Come the end of another transfer window and Tottenham Hotspur have made three major signings this summer. Emmanuel Adebayor has arrived on a season long loan from Manchester City, Scott Parker, who was named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year last year, arrived on deadline day from West Ham United, and Brad Friedel was signed on free from Aston Villa. Apart from these three, Spurs have also signed Yago Falque Silva on loan from Juventus, Souleymane Coulibaly, the 16 year old Ivorian, from Siena and Cristain Ceballos from Barcelona‘s youth academy for free. They have also got Kyle Walker back from Aston Villa who was on loan there last season. With regards to the big signings, it is now time to analyse what impact the three major signings Tottenham have made will have on the club this season.

Brad Friedel:

Brad Friedel is a fantastic goalkeeper with a great reputation. While he has already conceded 8 goals in the 2 games that he has played, one cannot judge him by that. He recently made a record for the most number of consecutive appearances in the Premier League, which speaks a lot about his reliability. When the Spurs defence becomes shaky, he can most definitely produce the goods in keeping clean sheets and making important saves. He is 41 years old but still has the class to make it at the top. Given his experience and reliability, he will certainly be the No.1 goalkeeper who will play ahead of both Huerelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini.

Scott Parker:

A fantastic midfielder who can score goals and the perfect replacement for Wilson Palacios, Scott Parker is a great addition to bolster the Spurs midfield. Palacios, whose form dipped after the death of his brother, has left Spurs for Stoke City. Parker is a good experienced player who can complement Luka Modric brilliantly in the middle of the park and will most certainly play ahead of both Tom Huddlestone and the Brazillian Sandro.

Emmanuel Adebayor:

Once hated and suddenly the man whom Tottenham fans have begun to love, Emmanuel Adebayor is a loan arrival from Manchester City. Adebayor, who has a fantastic record against Spurs and has scored 10 goals in the last appearances, now finds himself in Tottenham’s jersey in what has been a surprise move. Having earned the wrath of Arsenal fans, who snubbed him when he left for Manchester City, during his infamous celebration during a City victory, Adebayor must be certainly looking to score against Arsenal and infuriate them even more, thus adding more colour to the derbies. Adebayor certainly has the ability to be a 20-goal season striker, but has been awfully deprived of playing time. He is a very good replacement for Crouch. Though he will be at Tottenham for just 12 months, he will certainly look to do his best to write off the critics and will be a good replacement for Peter Crouch. As Tottenham have been looking for a lone striker who can play off Rafael van der Vaart in the 4-4-1-1 formation, he will fit in right away. There will be competition from Jermaine Defoe to ward off though, but Adebayor’s addition could prove valuable if the striker proves himself.

The biggest miss for Tottenham has been Gary Cahill, who would have been a wonderful addition had he been snapped up on deadline day. The biggest achievement however has been the club’s strong resolve in holding on to Luka Modric despite several tempting offers from Chelsea. Despite the poor start to the season, Tottenham should be a force to be reckoned with and will be strong contenders to get back into the Champions League.
