Whilst most of the column inches over the summer, were no doubt, devoted to Gareth Bale and his world record transfer to Real Madrid, Spurs have quietly gone about their business to ensure they don’t miss Bale. Franco Baldini has certainly been one of the busiest person this summer, with all the deals that he has pulled off.
Let us took a look at why Spurs actually look like they have gotten the better end of the bargain, even with the loss of their MVP from last year. For a little less than fee of the transfer paid by Real to procure Bale, Tottenham have signed five players, who are capable of taking them to the Champions League.
From the streets of Sao Paolo, Spurs have managed to find a gem, who was an integral part of Brazil’s Confederations Cup winning team. In Paulinho, Spurs boast of a rare quality of player, one who is equally adept at the physical confrontations and has the eye for goal.
From his humble beginnings, Paulinho has developed into the quintessential modern midfielder, adept at both attacking and defending. His imposing physique and presence, should see him fit right in, in the Premier League. And a central midfield trio of himself, Dembele and Capoue is one that many teams will find hard to get through, both in the Premier League and in Europe.
Nacer Chadli
The Belgian winger signed from Twente, raised a few eyebrows when it was announced. But, after his first couple of games in the Premier League, the Belgian has no doubt, endeared himself to the Spurs faithful with his directness, pass and his strength.
Although he plays on the left wing, the right footed winger is equally capable of playing on either flank or even throughout the middle and his versatility will no doubt be a blessing for Andre Villas-Boas. His experience in Europe and his uncanny ability to draw a foul are just a couple more reasons why he will no doubt, prove to be an invaluable asset for Spurs.
Etienne Capoue
As soon as Huddlestone was sold to Hull, Spurs were quick to snap up the young French international from Toulouse, who looks tailor made for the Premier League. He is a strong, versatile defensive midfielder, who can also step forward and contribute to the attack.
In fact, what sets Capoue apart from other defensive midfielders, is the fact that he is versatile and also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder. Last season, although he played as the defensive midfielder in Toulouse’s 4-1-4-1 formation, he still managed seven goals and three assists, and even impressed his manager in his first outing.
Not since the partnership of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov have Spurs had a partnership or even a striker, who was capable of getting the goals that their football merited. And their record summer signing, Spanish striker Soldado will surely fill that void and give Spurs a focal point in their attack.
The Spurs attack of last year was reliant solely on Bale, because of the fact that their strike force couldn’t conjure up the goals. Now, with the addition of the prolific Spaniard, who has already two goals to his name in the Premier League, they look all set for a great season ahead.
Erik Lamela
From being a pint-sized prodigy growing up in the streets of Buenos Aires to being an idol, loved at Rome, Lamela certainly has come a long way. But, right throughout his career, his pace and close control was there for all to see.
Roma fans might have grown a little impatient about his excessive ball hogging, but his 99 dribbles in Serie A last year, certainly showed that when he had it, there was excitement in the air. For what it’s worth, Bale only had 59 in the Premier League. And although he is predominantly a No.10, his versatility means that he is equally adept whilst on the wings, where he was deployed in Roma.
