Tottenham's most crucial transfer window

Rajthfc

Holidays are a great thing, we all need to recharge our batteries sometime and after a busy time of work it was good to get away and relax, I also took a much earned break from looking at anything to do with Spurs, though the Mrs did have a go at me at one point when I checked Newsnow one too many times for her liking.C’est La Vie!

Nevertheless I’m now back in rainy Blighty and distinctly underwhelmed with the lack of transfer activity at Spurs. Whilst its good to see Harry again reiterate Modric is going nowhere, it’s quite irritating despite the constant denials that the papers seem to be doing their level best to sell him via the media. Even more respected hacks like Jonathan Norcroft from The Sunday Times seem to be hellbent on Modric to United stories and at 20 million??? Whilst I’m quite confident that Luka will stay this window, whether the likes of Bale and Modric hang around beyond that if we fail to qualify for the Champions League is a moot point and if they didn’t who are we to blame them?

It’s why this transfer window is crucial for Spurs. A little ambition is needed here or even the likes of the Bindippers are going to over take us, although to be honest signing Jordan Henderson is hardly something that should get Spurs quaking in their boots.

So far we have signed a forty-year old goalkeeper in Brad Friedel. He’s competent enough but no way should he be first choice and let’s be clear signing a geriatric Yank is hardly a statement of intent. What we need is a confident Gomes and we’ll be ok in the goalkeeping position.

It’s painfully clear where we need upgrading. The current smart money is on Brazilian International Leandro being our next signing. We have already had a £10 million plus bid rejected but with the club’s relationship with Internacional its a transfer that should go through unless Levy decides to play hardball again and haggles over the sum.

As a player I don’t know much about him, though I did look him up on every fanboy’s best friend You Tube and he looks a finisher, however he is just that, don’t expect Brazillian-esque skills from him as he is certainly not the next Ronaldo ( the Brazilian one). However he at 21 is a full Brazilian International, never a bad thing, and if he is signed I will be keeping a keen eye out for him at the Copa America this summer.

We need at least two strikers but looking around who is available and more importantly gettable?Lets forget about the likes of Rossi and Aguero because it aint gonna happen with no CL to offer and our relatively low wage structure compared to our competitors both at home and abroad. The names of Gervino, Hulk and Falcao keep getting bandied about. The Lille president has come out and said we have had a £10 million bid rejected. I’m a bit weary of flavour of the month signings. Falcao has been around for while but as come to prominence during Porto‘s successful Europa League campaign. However we need to be cuter with our signings, in my opinion even players like Sturridge and Welbeck would be good additions to the squad. Not taking a punt in the last two transfer windows means the club has to be more realistic in what we can get this season. For every Berbatov out there, there is also a Helder Postiga or a Sergei Rebrov.

It seems silly season for overrated young English players yet again. The Bindippers spunked £20 million on Jordan Henderson. Now I’m not an avid Sunderland observer but they have had a distinctly average season, he made his England debut against France and looked a bit out of his depth. He wasn’t too impressive in the U21 game against Spain last night, where we got a chance to watch Phil Jones who is on the verge of joining United. Obviously one game is far too early to make a judgement and he’s received rave reviews at Blackburn but last night he seemed to be doing his best Michael Dawson impression of hoofing the ball forward at any given opportunity. Despite the result, wasn’t it depressing to see how far behind we are the Spaniards in technique, organisation, awareness and overall ability. Unless changes are made at the very top it’s going to be a depressing few years for our national team, however going through England’s malaise is well worth another post.

A bright spot from the game yesterday were the performances of our full back duo Danny Rose and to a greater extent Kyle Walker. Surely the time has come to bring Walker into the fold at Spurs, he is a bright spark and its time to ship Alan Hutton out and provide Charlie with some real competition, he could even rival Azza at right wing.

An interesting link that has come up is the name of Jack Rodwell. He was one of football’s bright young things only a couple of season’s back but fell of the radar last year. However if we are hellbent on securing another midfielder I’d have him over Scott Parker. I remember watching an Everton victory over United where he was exceptional.

So we can now wait and wonder what the next few weeks bring us.The fixture list comes out at the end of the week, away days for me might be limited this season but lets not forget what a great experience it is to go away with Spurs, we have arguably the best away following in the land, with only United in my opinion holding a torch to us. Here’s some You Tube clips of Spurs doing what we do best, taking the piss out of our Country Bumpkin neighbours from down the Seven Sisters Road including a brilliant sing song outside the Al Quaeda with absolutely no response from the pathetic Woolwich home support. Could you ever see our neighbours doing the same at the Lane?

As always thank god that you weren’t born Arsenal like some of the pathetic morsels in the second vid :)

Enjoy
