Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes has said that he plans to leave the Catalan club at the end of the season and speculation has been rife over who will be brought in to replace the long-term servant of the club. They have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach’s German international Marc-André ter Stegen. At just 21 he has impressed and he certainly has a lot of potential He has already appeared for his national side on three occasions.
Another 21-year-old Thibaut Courtois has been impressing in La Liga with Atletico Madrid and would represent a better signing for Barca as he already knows the league well. He would provide Barcelona with someone they could rely on for at least the next ten years. Courtois is only on loan at Atletico Madrid and his parent club Chelsea would be unwilling to sell as he is seen as the successor to Petr Cech eventually. Considering it is Barca and how well Courtois is settled in La Liga it could be an offer he will find hard to resist. With Petr Cech showing no signs of slowing down and Chelsea backing him to continue it could really be a good move for the Belgian international.
Another surprising and more controversial choice for Barca would be to go for Iker Casillas. The out of favour Madrid Captain will be tempted to look elsewhere for first team opportunities with the World Cup around the corner. Arsenal are also in for a keeper and Wenger would definitely fancy Iker if he is available.
If Barca pursue Stegen or Iker and land either one then no one would be more relieved than Jose Mourinho. He recently quoted “We have the worlds best Keeper in Cech and the worlds best young keeper in Courtois” and would be hoping Barca won’t tempt the young Belgian. He would not want to lose the worlds best young keeper and certainly not to an European rival.
