Liverpool qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after beating European heavyweights Bayern Munich 1-3 on their own turf in the second-leg of the round of 16 ties. A brace from Sadio Mane and a towering header from Virgil Van Dijk helped Liverpool get past Bayern Munich who failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since they failed to do so during the 2010/11 campaign.
Liverpool opened the scoring through in-form Sadio Mane at the 26th-minute mark to give Liverpool an away-goal advantage. Bayern did respond quickly as Gnabry's cross was put into his own net by Joel Matip. Virgil Van Dijk's header on the 69th minute took Liverpool in front and if Bayern wanted to qualify for the next round, they had to score 2 in the last 20 minutes. Mo Salah had some chances of his own but failed to capitalize on them.
The final nail in the coffin came in the 84th minute when Sadio Mane took the tie out of the reach of Bayern Munich by scoring a brilliant header past Neuer from a Mo Salah cross. Liverpool became the 4th English team to qualify for the quarter-finals in this season's Champions League after Manchester United, Tottenham, and Manchester City.
Manuel Neuer, who is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world football had a game to forget. He was the culprit for Sadio Mane's opener as he rushed off his line and misjudged it completely. Sadio Mane took the ball in his strides and chipped it over two Bayern Munich defenders. And football fans were very quick to identify his mistake and took it to Twitter to troll the German international.
