Barcelona maintained their pressure on title favourites Real Madrid with a thumping 7-1 win over relegation-threatened Osasuna, only 3 days after the Catalan outfit’s memorable 3-2 win over Los Blancos. It was Lionel Messi once again, who stole the show while Andre Gomes and Paco Alcacer also played starring roles.
Messi opened the scoring with a deft chip over Salvatore Sirigu before Andre Gomes fired home a half-volley into the back of the net. Osasuna pulled one back through a peach of a free-kick by Roberto Torres, who caught Marc-Andre Ter Stegen wrong-footed with his shot. The away side dominated the proceedings for a brief spell in the second half before Andre Gomes fired home his second.
Messi then also scored his second before being substituted with a placed finish from the edge of the box, making it 4 goals in 4 days for the Argentine. Paco Alcacer then joined the party and added Barcelona’s fifth before Denis Suarez was tripped in the Osasuna box awarding the Catalan club a penalty.
To the surprise of many, Javier Mascherano stepped up to take the penalty and buried it past Sirigu to score his first goal for Barcelona since joining them 7 years ago. Alcacer then completed the rout by scoring into an empty net after rounding off Sirigu in the closing stages of the game.
Madrid later won their game 6-2 against a helpless Deportivo la Coruna side to come back on level points with the Camp Nou outfit, albeit having played a game less.
Twitter, as you would expect, exploded after Barcelona’s comprehensive win.
Barca became the first team to score 100 league goals in Europe’s top 5 leagues.
Some Messi-merization!
Truer words have never been said!
Javier Mascherano you legend!
