Dele Alli has been caught in the subsequent storm

While England edged Slovakia in a narrow 2-1 victory in their World Cup qualifying match, one of their most promising stars seems to have triggered quite a controversy.

Dele Alli's face has found its way to the front page of several media outlets after the Englishman reportedly made a rude gesture, which many believe, was directed towards the match referee Clement Turpin.

After being denied a foul in a dangerous position, the 21-year old retaliated with a churlish hand gesture in the direction of the match official. The player, however, has publicly claimed that the gesture was made amicably towards teammate Kyle Walker.

While the matter is being handled behind closed doors, Twitter, as usual, began buzzing about the incident, with fans taking to the social media to vent their feelings.

A majority of the Twitterati were scathing in their reviews of the incident, with fans lambasting the 21-year old left, right and centre. Deemed to be a role model for children at impressionable ages, Dele Alli's actions have drawn harsh criticism from fans and pundits alike.

While the rage spread like wildfire, the rest of the Twitterati, of course, took it up as an opportunity to exercise their meme game and flooded the social networking site with hilarious takes of the incident.

The midfielder is expected to face action for his little stunt and could be subject to a 4-match ban in the near future. While authorities are reportedly debating the punishment, fans demanded that the incident shouldn't be trivialised and that the youngster should indeed be punished.
