Any hopes Chelsea had this season of winning a trophy were dashed when Everton beat the London club 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final at Goodison Park. Former Blues striker Romelu Lukaku came back to haunt them as he scored two second-half goals to dump Guus Hiddink’s side out of the cup.
Having already been dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, this was Chelsea’s last shot at a trophy and a possible chance to qualify for the Europa League next season at the very least. Hiddink’s side are in 10th place in the Premier League table – 11 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City – and look highly unlikely to grab a top four spot to qualify for the Champions League.
But apart from Lukaku’s goals, the highlight of the match was Diego Costa’s sending off for a second yellow card. Surprisingly, it was his first red card in his Chelsea career and one that he could have easily avoided had he kept his cool. A challenge from Gareth Barry saw Costa immediately get to his feet and square up to the English midfielder.
Costa was seen trying to headbutt him out of the way as Barry refused to back down. The pair were so close that replays also showed Costa appearing to bite Barry’s neck before embracing him and realizing that it would be his last act on the pitch with referee Michael Oliver having no choice but to issue a second yellow and send him off.
Of course, Twitter had a lot to say following the incident. Here are a few tweets that went viral.
