Newcastle United started this game totally opposite of their approach against Manchester City. They registered their first shot on target in the fifth minute of the game, a long-range shot forcing David de Gea to make an early save. They were looking to play against United and not just sit back.

Lukaku put the ball in the net in the 53rd minute but his goal was disallowed as there was a clear push on the defender in the build-up. Sanchez spoilt an open goal chance as the extra touch cost him allowing his shot to be blocked. However, Manchester United were made to pay for their misses as Matt Ritchie gave the Geordies the lead in the 65th minute.
Newcastle showed their defensive solidarity after going up and their debutant goalkeeper Dubravka was one of the standouts. Newcastle United were rewarded for their defensive excellence as they held on for a 1-0 result claiming their first win since October while Mourinho's side drift further behind leaders Manchester City
