Ajax produced arguably the biggest upset in the past decade of the Champions League as they humiliated the defending champions Real Madrid, knocking the holders out of the competition in the round of 16.
Many felt Ajax deserved a victory in the first leg at Amsterdam, but naivety and poor finishing cost the Dutch side who ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 result. However, they did little wrong in the second leg at the Bernabeu as they crushed the hosts by four goals to one.
Hakim Ziyech got things rolling for the visitors as early as the seventh minute before David Neres added a second following a scintillating display of footwork from Dusan Tadic ten minutes later.
Tadic, who had assisted both previous goals, then got one for himself in extremely controversial circumstances, with VAR likely to come under scrutiny in the aftermath of the game. The ball seemed to have rolled out of play in the build-up to the goal, but the benefit of doubt went with the visitors whose fans could hardly believe what they were witnessing.
While substitute Marco Asensio looked to have got one back for the hosts, a stunning free-kick just minutes later by Lasse Schone all but sealed progression for Ajax.
A red card for Nacho late on made matters just that much worse for Madrid. The defeat adds to the uncertainty surrounding Madrid manager Santiago Solari's future, and he could be shown the door sooner rather than later. For Real Madrid, on the other hand, it looks like an unprecedented trophyless season, with the club out of the Copa del Rey and 12 points off league leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona in LaLiga.
