Over the years, Chelsea have been renowned for their water tight defense. Ever since the departure of Ricardo Carvalho, there has been a huge gap left in the middle of the blues defense. Brazilian starlet David Luiz was brought in from Benfica to fill that gap but his reckless nature has led to inconsistent performances along with captain John Terry. Andreas Villas Boas has made it clear that he would like to play a high line of defense which puts both Luiz and Terry out of their comfort zone. The blues have leaked a remarkable 17 goals in the premier league so far and change is needed in the middle of defense. With summer target Gary Cahill, not putting in performances that are living up to expectation, Athletico Madrid defender, Diego Godin looks like the perfect man to tighten up the defense. The 25 year old is a ball playing defender, with pace and is always quick to recover. Godin has not ruled out a move to Stamford Bridge in the near future and his arrival would be extremely welcomed by the Chelsea faithful.
Also Gregory van der Wiel’s inspiring performances for the Dutch national side in the 2010 World Cup earned him a spot on the shopping list of Europe’s top clubs. The Ajax right back has bundles of energy and enthusiasm going forward and is equally confident with the defensive side of his game, which is what current Chelsea right back, Jose Bosingwa lacks. The Portugese man may look threatening in attack but is dreadful in defense. Branislav Ivanovic has also played at right back this season and has often looked the Blues best defender. However, playing a center back out of position is always a liability. The 23 year old Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move to West London and with AVB in the process of rebuilding the squad, Van der Wiel would be a worthy investment.
