Xabi Alonso is one of the most decorated Spaniards of all-time and a legend in the truest sense of the word. However, playing in what turned out to be his last UEFA Champions League game – as he has already announced he will be retiring at the end of the season – the former Real Madrid man was below average and his decision to call it quits at the end of the season was vindicated.
He is still the calm and collected presence in the middle of the park but age has caught up with him and he was dispossed and outpaced by Real Madrid players on numerous occasions.
