People only talk about the best 11 players of the tournament and create an all star 11 team, but what about a Benchwarmers XI – a team fully made of subsitutes?
Goalkeeper-
Victor Valdes (Spain, Barcelona)
Matches (as on 28-6-12) – 0
He has won more club titles than Casillas with Barcelona, but Iker is the number 1 for Spain. Though Valdes has talent, it is deemed to be inferior to that of Casillas. And Iker is the captain of Spain as well.
Defenders-
Patrice Evra (France, Manchester United)
Matches – 1
The United interim skipper may have been a regular for the Red Devils but he lost his place in the squad to City’s Clichy.
Per Mertesacker (Germany, Arsenal)
Matches – 0
The lanky arsenal defender has been kept out by Mats Hummels, who has been very impressive.
Raul Albiol (Spain, Real Madrid)
Matches – 0
He has had his glory days, but after picking up an injury in the World Cup, he hasn’t looked like how he once was.
Ignazio Abate (Italy, AC Milan)
Matches – 2
He has been a regular for AC Milan, but Juventus has dominated the Italian squad, and Abate has just played twice.
Midfielders-
Juan Mata (Spain, Chelsea)
Matches – 0
He was the player of the season for Chelsea, but he hasn’t played a single game for spain.
Toni Kroos (Germany, Bayern Munich)
Matches – 4
Yes, he has played 4 games, but he has been on the field for just 108 minutes.
Mario Gotze (Germany, Borrusia Dortmund)
Matches – 1
A transfer target for most of the top clubs, but he has played for only just 10 minutes.
Jesus Navas (Spain, Sevilla)
Matches – 3
He scored a goal when he was subsituted in the game against Croatia, so he deserves this place.
Forwards-
Dirk Kuyt (Holland, Fenerbahce)
Matches – 2
He has been on the field for just 12 minutes, but we know he is capable of scoring goals.
Pedro Rodriguez (Spain, Barcelona)
Matches – 2
The Spanish forward had a good season with Barcelona, but he couldn’t get a permanent place in the team. He was only used a time wasting subsitute in the 2 games.
I hope you will be satisfied with this team. If not, feel free to give your opinion in the comments.
